In a surprising move, Acura revealed today that its 2014 MDX crossover SUV will be available for the first time as a front-wheel drive model, which will result in nearly $1,000 savings for those who opt out of the all-wheel-drive option.
Acura is killing two birds with one stone by releasing the FWD variation of the highly successful MDX luxury sports utility vehicle, which has even outsold the ever popular RDX, a smaller crossover SUV. The cheaper price tag of the MDX will appeal to buyers who make Internet price comparison increasingly a prerequisite in all of their shopping, including cars.
The other excellent benefit is, of course, the mileage, which is significantly higher than both the last year's model and the 2014 AWD iteration. The front-wheel drive MDX now boasts excellent fuel economy with 20 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg in a combined city/highway driving environment, a noticeable improvement which will result in big gas savings for the environmentally-minded crowd.
The 2014 MDX partly owes its success to a sweeping redesign that has brought a host of new features, a treat for Acura lovers who will now enjoy easier back row access, deeper smartphone integration, better entertainment, and Honda's award winning safety features, such as the knee-level airbag, brought over from other Honda and Acura lines.
